rocketrob's -- Duratrax Vendetta ST-SR (long wheelbase conversion)

Beitrag  rocketrob am So Nov 28, 2010 2:42 am

Pardon my German - I enjoy the fact that you guys over in Europe are fans of 1/18th scale minis, and also race them like we do over in the U.S., and I thought I would include a few photos of mine for you to enjoy.

A little over a year ago Duratrax came out with another version of the Vendetta, the SC (or Short Course truck), but many people including myself had already been using custom modified extended chassis plates to take advantage of the longer wheelbase SC chassis. PhatBodies in the UK subsequently came out with a buggy-style body called the "Bolt" - and it's proven to be a winning combination. The SC chassis plate has stretched the wheelbase to 185mm (from 160mm) which make the car much more stable at high speeds and over the jumps.

The guys running the LRP Shark over in the UK are just using the same Duratrax SC chassis that they've importd from the United States.
The conversion can be made simply by obtaining the chassis plate, center driveshaft, and battery hold down plate - and, of course, the PhatBodies Bolt body.

As most of you know, the Vendetta line-up is just another variant of the same car produced by LRP and called the Shark over there - though the cars were produced original by a company called Anderson, who then sold the manufacturing rights to the car to Duratrax in the USA, LRP in Europe, and Yokomo in Aisa.

I've also changed my set-up a little since my days of running the short wheelbase car, so I've included a copy of my set-up sheet to be of assistance. Enjoy. Hallo Smilie
Hallo Smilie

I feel honored, as you have replied in English. Top Smilie

Depending on the track - I use a Novak Mongoose 10.5 for a large/highspeed layout, and 13.5 for smaller/more technical layouts.

In my other, with the truggy-style body, I use a Traxxas VXL 1/16th system - but I much prefer the sensored Mongoose system. it is much smoother.

I recently obtained a Tekin RS Pro speed control, and plan on giving that a try - not that I am having any issues with my Mongoose ESC - just to see any differences. But I think the Novak sensored system is the best all-around on the market for these cars.

I did not want to rain on your Chunk-parade or work, since you did such a nice job with your comprehensive report - and other than foam tires mine isn't much different than yours.
I currently don't have any photos of my Chunk in action on the track, and my daughter has borrowed my camera, but as soon as I get some taken I will post them.

I don't know if you have considered obtaining the extended chassis for your LRP Shark, but I can not recommend it highly enough.
It will give it the same approximate wheelbase as your Chunk = much better handling. Top Smilie

I think the the Tekin RS Pro controler is also a good speed controler. Some people in the UK drive this combination.
Let us know how the combination works.

@Chunk
Thanks Very Happy
Yes please, post a picture of your chunk, if you have the camera again Very Happy

By the way: where do you live in the USA?

Yes - the Tekin RS is a good ESC, gives the car a little more brakes from what I understand. I will be testing it out next weekend, so I will keep you updated to how it works.

Yes - I will get up some photos of my chunk when I can.
But I am more concerned that you try and obtain the SC-extended chassis for your Shark - just so you can see how great it works, and how much better it makes the car. If you have any troubles obtaining the parts just let me know, as they are easier to obtain here in the USA (since they are produced by Duratrax).

Depending on the time of year, I live in several different places in the US. Currently up north for the winter, so I will be doing a lot of indoor racing on carpet.

I will order the long sc carbon chassis soon it is available. I will order it from RCMI.
This shop requires no shipping costs Smile

Ghost 22
Free shipping/"no shipping costs" is good - but the conversion will still be very expensive.

I saw mention of the carbon fiber chassis RCMI is making, but it would be my advice to use the plastic version by Duratrax instead.
I manufactured my own cf chassis last season, and I found during testing that it was just too stiff for off-road (bumps and jumps) use. It was fine if you were running on a flat track, but just was not stable enough on off-road style layouts. Even using the stiffener some of the guys over in the UK are using makes the car perform oddly and inconsistently, in opinion.
I would suggest trying the standard plastic SC chassis conversion first, and if you still want to go cf then do it at a later date.

Here are links to the parts you need, and it only will cost you about $30 USD.

Hey rocketrob!
Welcome to the forum Wink Now we are a multicultural community Schlag Smilie rofl Smilie

Nice Duratrax Vandetta/ LRP Shark you have here (actually they are the same rofl Smilie )

I'm also planning to get the longer wb-conversion with the sc chassis, but maybe will take the carbon-verson, like ghost 22 from rcmi.
We will race our's on an indoor carpet track during winter, so a stiff chassis should be the right way.
For offroad the plastic chassis should be better, like you sayed, its more flexible.

The Novak Mongoose is the best way to go in a 1/18 scale racecar, as it's supersmooth and has lots of power Top Smilie ghost 22 an me are driving the same combo, as you know allready Top Smilie

hmmm maybe we should also write some reviews in english and german rofl Smilie
you also find rc-gaudee in facebook Wink

Thank you, again, for the welcome steakjunky -
and I appreciate your responses in English Top Smilie, especially since my German is so poor. Schlag Smilie

The longer wheelbase chassis is one of the best modifications I ever did, initially over 1-1/2 years ago - as I mentioned earlier, it makes a tremendous difference in the handling and jumping abilities of the Vendetta/Shark platform.

As I mentioned before, I manufactured my own cf chassis last year - and while it works fine if you are only road racing them (flat track) it was a little too inconsistent for my tastes on a track with jumps. The plastic version is also about 100-Euros less expensive (I posted the links to the needed parts above).
We only race our 1/18ths indoors on carpet, so similar to your winter plans, so I am looking forward to hearing about your results over there.

I like to keep up with any discussion forums where 1/18th's are mentioned, so I hope to enjoy my stay here with you guys. Party

If there is anything I can help you find over here in the USA, just let me know.

By all means - yes, I would be quite happy with assisting you in obtaining parts for your Shark. I am sure things are easier to find here.
I can purchase from a supplier here, and then send on to you and mark as a "gift" so you can avoid taxes/duties. Wink

The one complaint I always had about the short wheelbase Detta/Shark, was that it was so "twitchy" and was a handfull to drive.
So much so that I had to dial most of the steering exponential out on my controller, just so that the car did not dart all over the place. And it was almost dangerous on a highspeed/big track.
With the long wheelbase chassis I actually had to dial the steering back into the car, to almost maximum - and now the car drives more like a 1/10th scale 4wd car. Point and shoot, and it goes where you aim it. It is absolutely marvelous on highspeed tracks, tracks perfectly straight, and over jumps that I used to have to be careful I can just peg the throttle and let it fly with no fear whatsoever.

IT'S A BEAST !!!!!!!!!!!! Rock Smilie
